Yes, that's true - each chapter stands on it's own, and there are usually a few years in between each.
However, Avernum 6 provides closure on pretty much all the ongoing plots and characters, and as Jeff's writing is usually absolutely superb, the main characters are very, very memorable.

Exile 3 was the very first shareware game I ever purchased, and I have bought every Spiderweb game since. Avadon was the only one I genuinely disliked, because I couldn't stand the personality of your companions.

See? That's what I mean. For some reason I wasn't aware of these games until not that long ago. I wish I had grown up with them, meaning I would have played when they came out.

The thing is, as far as I know... while the plot advances from one to another, each game is a separate entity with its own party, right? So, I could play Avernum 3 without knowing what happened in Avernum 2, for example, and still know what's happening, couldn't I?

Avernum and Geneforge were develop both at the same time. Geneforge 5 came out before Avernum 6. You should play Avernum 1 (the new one is fine), Avernum 3 and Avernum 6, by the way. In this order. Avernum 6 CONTINUALLY features THE best boss-battles and set-pieces I have ever seen in any RPG ever.

Geneforge 5 has a stunning amount of plot-branches, and is very much worth playing for that alone. You can join or betray and rejoin and rebetray pretty much any of the five major factions - it's very, very political and very, very well done.

Both Geneforge and Avernum are finished, story-wise.

Well, yeah. There certainly is an impact on your party composition. In my second run I'm using a heavy armor fist fighter, a tanky lizardman rogue, a throwing weapon minotaur rogue and an air mage, and I'm just rushing through combats. Yet, the fact that you can't be deadlocked also means just that, that in the end, you could finish the game pretty much with anything. My first team was really suboptimal, with two poorly leveled fighters, a bow/dodge rogue and a fire/ice wizard that had too many points in earth and spellcraft. And still, the only room I really, really remember having me sighing and reloading again and again was the inner sanctum after opening the portal. And, of course, the final battle where I was trying to evade the pits and cornered myself many times before deciding that I rather used the pits as an emergency exit. It took me around 15 hours and 40 minutes to complete the game, but with a "proper" party that time could have very well been reduced at least an hour.

I can't wait for the level editor X)

Hah, my party had the biggest issue until hitting level 10. In the end, I was able to tank even the wood golems without much dancing, once my fighter got the full valor plate and the elemental shield, and my rogue hit Evasion 65, which was pretty much the sweet spot. That was on normal, though.

I think that party-building has a LOT more influence about performance than you give it credit for - but as you CAN dance around monsters, you won't be deadlocked. Which is good!

(And there's definitely enough items to equip for rogues - one archer, two throwers, one dagger-specialist.)

The only thing I miss from Grimrock is a more satisfying ending, and the ability to play multiplayer a la Bloodwych. That would have been something.

Otherwise? I am VERY satisfied. :)

I didn't play the demo, I played the full version. Having harder modes doesn't make the game any deeper, as well as making the ghosts run faster in PacMan wouldn't make the game a more hardcore experience or something. Evidently, the game is just not for me, but I can hardly see how playing any more would make me think otherwise. Yet, one of my friends gave it another try and managed to get quite further in the game. A minigame where you have to avoid bombs? That certainly won't make me go back. I'm not saying the game is bad, I'm saying it wasn't what I expected, and that under my point of view, it's a missed opportunity.

If the game was actually about achieving 100% on each level in the hardest difficulty, I might had as well approached it as an arcade of some sort instead of an RPG. But obviously, I didn't understand its underlaying complexity :P

It seems to me you obviously scored this game low because it wasn't what you were expecting, rather than accept that Wanderlust is a different type of game. You can mash through chapters if you want, but that wont net you 100%, which is all that matters in the end.

Also, lol on reviewing the game in the first 3 chapter demo rather than beating the game and realizing Epic mode will woop your ass over and over again.
